john wilde :: essays research papers

Art History John Wilde Gallery Paper Well walking through the gallery the only piece that stood out to me was John Wilde's piece "A Tribute to the Rubber Stamp #7" a silver point on paper. The piece itself has a very simple composition that contains a hand coming into the page from the left side about about a third of the way up the page. The arm has a shirt on with a pinstripe jacket over it. On the right side of the page is a six banded armadillo with a snail with wings. These animals are placed in the right third of the page. Behind the hand is very light mountain forms that peaks right above the hand and slowly slopes down to pretty much the center of the page and flows fairly flat and parallel with the hand. The mountains are the only thing with a sense of color in the piece, they are washed with a very subtle brown wash. The only other thing that has any sense of color is the armadillos shadow and thats extremely minimal. The armadillo and snail seem to be pretty much proportioned properly except that the armadillos tail is a little to long and the back side of the nail is too big. I think the wings that are on the back of the snail looks exactly like the Detroit Red Wings emblem, minus the color. Everything seems to be drawn graphicly except for the mountains that are drawn fairly loose. The palm of the hand has very good detail and it looks fairly realistic even without any shading. The armadillo and snail are drawn very well, there's a good amount of detail like the tiny hairs that come out of the front of the armadillos she right under its face, and the scale of the armadillo are are very good. The mountains split the composition and give the piece a background and a foreground. The way the mountains go through the page makes the background go back into space and the foreground come forward even though all it is, is wide open white space. another things the mountains do is take your eye from the left side of the page and slowly guides them to the right side, the hand also aids the composition in this almost pointing you towards the right side of the page towards the animals.

Long before Europeans came to North America, aboriginal people had a highly developed system of education. There was a great deal for aboriginal children to learn before they could survive on their own. Aboriginal elders and parents passed on not only survival skills to their children, but their history, artistic ability, music, language, moral and religious values. When European missionaries began to live amongst aboriginal people, they concluded that the sooner they could separate children from their parents, the sooner they could prepare aboriginal people to live a civilized (i. e. European) lifestyle. Residential schools were established for two reasons: separation of the children from the family and the belief that aboriginal culture was not worth preserving. Most people concluded that aboriginal culture was useless and dying and all human beings would eventually develop and change to be like the ‘advanced’ European civilization. Early residential schools were similar to religious missions. Later, the mission-run schools were administered jointly by Canadian churches and the federal government, and for a number of years, residential schools became official Canadian policy for the education of Indian. . . Provincial education curriculums did not change to reflect the educational needs of aboriginal children. The elders in fact seen a major change in the way the children were acting, they would refuse to do chores and would often talk back and often became violant. The school demanded very little in comparison. Loneliness, sickness, confusion and abuse all had to be borne in lonely silence. Aboriginal children continue to have difficulties fitting in to the existing schools, which are still designed around a culture alien to their own. They were issued clothes and assigned a bed number. Aboriginal people have demanded, and received, official apologies from the Anglican, United and Roman Catholic churches which operated residential schools. All of this must have been a staggering shock to the new â€Å"student† . Many things combined to make the experience difficult for young aboriginal children. After several years away at school, children often found it difficult to speak their mother tongue. The residential school experience continues to plague First Nations education. The white man’s school contradicted everything these aboriginal children had learned at home. â€Å"The organization of the schools and the content of the curriculum conveyed to aboriginal children that the human values, the political institutions, the spiritual practices and the economic strategies of other Canadians were infinitely superior to the â€Å"primitive† ways of their traditional lifestyles. † Students began to believe that the ceremonies and rituals which harmonized the spiritual and social life of the community and gave its members a sense of personal significance and group identity, were â€Å"heathen† and â€Å"the work of the Devil.

Vegetarianism influences the people for plant-based diets with the keeping out of meat (red meat, poultry, and seafood). The majority of people who are overweight or obese increase with age due to fat, which in most of the cases, come from animals’ fat (Foer, 2009).Maintained by seniors, yet often forced upon children, to maintain a healthy diet and reasonable weight vegetable and fruit are the most valuable food. People with the highest consumption of vegetables and fruits could save the planet by consumption of less animal products and keeping the land fertile by reduced soil erosion & water contamination. Well-planned vegetarian diets are suitable for all stages of the life succession, including pregnancy, childhood & for athletes.A 2010 study compared a group of vegetarian and non- vegetarian in which vegetarians scored less depression tests and had better mind profiles. A vegetarian diet excludes all animal products, including eggs, dairy, honey th at means all food which directly or indirectly comes from animals. Production of animal feed consumes about one-third of Earth’s total arable land. (Vegetarianism and environment, 2010)Removing vegetation exposes the ground to more intense solar radiation, which increases evaporation and the risk that plants not eaten by cattle will die from lack of water.When the vegetative cover is removed it’s easily saying that the fertility of soil is easily decreased. Because when farmers cultivate the land they use some chemical which helps the land become fertile. So, by not killing the animals which are needed for our environment as well as to keep our planet balanced by saving our land, vegetarian people save the planet. On the other hand, some people think that becoming a vegetarian is not necessary for many individuals & religion as it is also harmful to stop eating animals. It may be a reason for a lower number of vegetarian people live in the society.Animal produced for f ood can benefit the environment. They also think that, wastes are created by animal which are decomposed by land and the process of decomposing releases necessary minerals and nutrients, so that the next generation of plant life and other living organisms can be benefited from them. Though meat is good for health, according to the critics, when erosion on farmland is not check properly and timely manner, so much topsoil can fade away that, that’s why most of the farmland can no longer be used to grow crops.Most of the farmland around the world is becoming useless to cultivate any food & it also harmful for the farmers as well because they have no work in that period of time. And avoiding meat means ultimately we support the animal creature to live in this earth and keep our planet balanced. Cultivate additional land is another understandable way to supply food for an escalating population. For better fertilization and reduce soil erosion waterless lands with limited vegetatio n cover 40 percent of the earth’s land area which can help the soil. Saxena, 2011) Animals play a vital role in our wild environment but animal byproducts are creating very bad situation for the environment. According to Saxena, many harmful gases and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) are formed when anaerobic bacteria decompose liquid manure held in the lagoons which are filled up by animal wastes. And, it becomes sources of harmful gases and many other hazardous particles mixed up with neighboring air when the lagoons are sprayed for decomposing on farmland. The far-away and neighborhood long-term effects of the emissions from this action include acid rain and global warming.For example, dissolved ammonia in the farmland filling of lagoons consisting of fertilizers and animal waste is serially broken down by microbes to form a variety of nitrogen gas, including nitrous oxide. This gas has harmful effects on the ozone layers of the atmosphere. Air also polluted by volatile o rganic compounds because these are gases that react with close air in the entire atmosphere. To support and increase living places for animal and for human as well many forests have been cut down, especially in tropical countries.Deforestation increase the carbon dioxide level in the atmosphere and obviously carbon dioxide is the major gas which can directly involve for greenhouse effect. (Saxena, 2011) As part of their digestive process, many animals such as goats, cattle, sheep and camels emit methane and methane gas also plays a very important role for greenhouse effect. Biodiversity creates a set of connections that maintains oxygen in air, enriches soil, purifies water, protects against flood and regulates climate.Not amazingly, the biodiversity of our planet is declining at an disturbing rate due to human behavior because human are mostly dependent on farm animals for food and there is a significant reduction of vegetarian people, that supports other animals. The era of vegeta rianism can improve the environmental growth of this planet and its sub-components have reached their zenith for the developed world. By avoiding all animal products vegetarians could save the planet because a grazing-based production can limit soil erosion.However, some people argue that vegetarianism alone won’t save the planet and animals. Each correspondent from vegetarian urges us to slash our greenhouse gas emissions, but each has a different perspective on where the knife should fall. Opposition include that, vegetarian must bear the burden of climate change by scaling their lavish lifestyle. Continuous degradation of land to produce more fruits and vegetables in same regions may lead to desertification, a process that is introduced by soil erosion, loss of groundwater etc.Desertification converts productive arid lands to wastelands. Studies show that people who consume a lot of vegetables and fruit, obviously, in most of the cases, avoid rich food, smoking habit & dri nking as well. So, conclusion is that without any hesitation vegetarian people are quite healthy and save the planet by cleaning the environment. In this case, avoiding animal is not the only issue, there is other issue as well which is avoid farming animal because their waste products are too much harmful for country’s environment.When the land is compacted by the hooves of cattle, rainwater cannot easily reach into the soil. Ideally, it is wise to obtain vitamins from vegetables, not from any meat. Vegetable provides vitamins in the most biologically available form, in the right amounts & combined with other complementary nutrients. People from different religion also are very happy about the concept of vegetarianism because they believe that only vegetarian people support them about saving animals which are necessary to keep the planet in a balance condition.Most of the earth’s plant and animal life has evolved during the last few centuries in a delicate balance wit h the cyclic temperature variation in each region. He started as a mechanical engineer working under an employer. After 5 years of hard work, he brought my whole family to America. He exemplifies the American Dream because he started from the very bottom and limbed his way to the top because he wanted to. His success has inspired me to pursue my dreams and make It a reality. Many countries in the world restrict their citizens of education. Even In India you must pay a lot of money in order to get a good education. L, on the other hand, am receiving a good education. A good education will help me achieve my dream Job, an electrical engineer. Nowhere else In the world could anyone even dream about. Sometimes you'll have to combine surface area and volume, sometimes you'll have to compare two solids to one another, but ultimately all solid geometry questions boil down to these concepts. So now let's go through our ACT math tips on how to find volumes, surface areas, and distances of all the different geometric solids. A perfect example of geometric solidsin the wild Prisms A prism is a three dimensional shape that has (at least) two congruent, parallel bases. Basically, you could pick up a prism and carry it with its opposite sides lying flat against your palms. A few of the many different kinds of prisms. Rectangular Solids A rectangular solid is essentially a box. It has three pairs of opposite sides that are congruent and parallel. Volume Necessary to know $\Volume = lwh$ The volume of a figure is the measure of its interior space. $l$ is the length of the figure $w$ is the width of the figure $h$ is the height of the figure Notice how this formula is the same as findingthe area of the square ($A = lw$) with the added dimension of height, as this is a three dimensional figure. First, identify the type of questionis it asking for volume or surface area? The question asksabout the interior space of a solid, so it's a volume question. Now we need to finda rectangular volume, but this question is somewhat tricky. Notice that we're finding out how much water is in a particular fish tank, but the water does not fill up the entire tank. If we just focus on the water, we would find that it has a volume of: $V = lwh$ = $(4)(3)(1) = 12\cubic\feet$ (Why did we multiply the feet and width by 1 instead of 2? Because the water only comes up to 1 foot; it does not fill up the entire 2 feet of height of the tank) Nowwe are going to put that 12 cubic feet of water into a second tank. This second tank has a total volume of: $V = lwh$ = $(3)(2)(4) = 24\cubic\feet$ Although the second tank can hold 24 cubic feet of water, we are only putting in 12. So $12/24 = 1/2$. The water will come up at exactly half the height of the second tank, which means the answer is D, 2 feet. Either way, those fish won't be very happy in half a tank of water Surface Area Necessary to know $\Surface\area = 2lw + 2lh + 2wh$ In order to find the surface area of a rectangular prism, you are finding the areas for all the flat rectangles on the surface of the figure (the faces) and then adding those areas together. In a rectangular solid, there are six faces on the outside of the figure. They are divided into three congruent pairs of opposite sides. If you find it difficult to picture surface area, remember that a die has six sides. So you are finding the areas of the three combinations of length, width, and height ($lw$, $lh$, and $wh$), which you then multiply by two because there are two sides for each of these combinations.The resulting areas are then all added together to getthe surface area. Diagonal Length Necessary to know (Note: it will be necessary for you to know how to find the diagonal, but you don't have to memorize the formula. Continue reading for more details on this.) $\Diagonal = √[l^2 + w^2 + h^2]$ The diagonal of a rectangular solid is the longest interior line ofthe solid. It touches from the corner of one side of the prismto the opposite corner on the other. You can find this diagonal by either using the above formula or by breaking up the figure into two flat triangles and using the pythagorean theorem for both. You can always do this is you do not want to memorize the formula or if you're afraid of mis-remembering the formula on test day. First, find the length of the diagonal (hypotenuse) of the base of the solid using the pythagorean theorem. $c^2 = l^2 + w^2$ Next, use that length as one of the smaller sides of a new triangle with the diagonal of the rectangular solid as the new hypotenuse. $d^2 = c^2 + h^2$ And solve for the diagonal using the pythagorean theorem again. Cubes Cubes are a special type of rectangular solid, just like squares are a special type of rectangle A cubehasa height, length, and width that are all equal. The six faces on a cube's surface are also all congruent. Volume Necessary to know $\Volume = s^3$ $s$ is the length of the side of a cube (any side of the cube, as they are all the same). This is the same thing as finding the volume of a rectangular solid ($v = lwh$), but, because their sides are all equal, you can simplify it by saying $s^3$. First, identify what the question is asking you to do. You're trying to fit smallerrectangles into a larger rectangle, so you're dealing with volume, not surface area. Find the volume of the larger rectangle (which in this case is a cube): So you can use the formula for the volume of a cube: $\Volume = s^3$ = $6^3 = 216$ Or you can use the formula to find the volume of any rectangular solid: $\Volume = lwh$ = $(6)(6)(6) = 216$ Now find the volume of one of the smaller rectangular solids: $\Volume = lwh$ = $(3)(2)(1) = 6$ And divide the larger rectangular solid by the smaller to find out how many of the smaller rectangular solids can fit inside the larger: $216/6 = 36$ So your final answer is D, 36 SurfaceArea Necessary to know $\Surface\area = 6s^2$ This is the same formulas as the surface area for a rectangular solid ($SA = 2lw + 2lh + 2hw$). Because all the sides are the same in a cube, you can see how $6s^2$ was derived: $2lw + 2lh + 2hw$ = $2ss + 2ss + 2ss$ = $2s^2 + 2s^2 + 2s^2$ = $6s^2$ You can approach this question in two ways: by using the formula or by doing it out longhand. If you use the formula for the surface area of a cube, you can say: $\Surface\area = (6)(3^2)$ $SA = (6)(9) = 54$ If you forget the formula (or are afraid of messing it up come test day), you can always do it out longhand: $\Surface\area = ss + ss + ss + ss + ss + ss$ or $SA = (ss)(6)$ (Remember that there are six faces on a cube like the six faces on a die) $SA = (3)(3) + (3)(3) + (3)(3) + (3)(3) + (3)(3) + (3)(3)$ or $SA = (3)(3)(6)$ $SA = 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 + 9 = 9(6) = 54$ Either way, you getthe answer K, 54 Diagonal Length Necessary to know (Note: it will be necessary for you to know how to find the diagonal, but you don't have to memorize the formula. Continue reading for more details on this.) $\Diagonal= s√3$ Just as with the rectangular solid, you can break up the cubeinto two flat triangles and use the pythagorean theorem for both as an alternative to the formula. This is the exact same process as finding the diagonal of a rectangular solid. First, find the length of the diagonal (hypotenuse) of the base of the solid using the pythagorean theorem. Next, use that length as one of the smaller sides of a new triangle with the diagonal of the rectangular solid as the new hypotenuse. Solve for the diagonal using the pythagorean theorem again. Cylinders A cylinder is a prism with two circular bases on its opposite sides Volume Necessary to know $\Volume = Ï€r^2h$ $Ï€$ is the universal constant, also represented as 3.14(159) $r$ is the radius of the circular base. It is any straight line drawn from the center of the circle to the circumference of the circle. $h$ is the height of the circle. It is the straight line drawn connecting the two circular bases. This problemgives you the formula for a cylinder, but the ACT is often inconsistent about this. Notice that this is problem #29 (an easy-medium level question), so you are given the formula. If this had been question #49, you would likely not have been given the formula. But because you are given the formula, it's easy toplug in your values into it. Pay attention, however, to exactly what the question is asking you to do. Just like with the fish tank question above, you are not being asked to fill up the whole container with water, only some of it. So if $\volume =Ï€r^2h$, then $V =Ï€(12^2)(5)$ (The radius is 12 because radius is half the diameter and the full diameter is 24. The height is 5 because the question tells us that we are only filling up the container to 5 feet). $V = 720Ï€ = 2,261.9448$ So the answer is C,2,262 Surface Area $\Surface\area = 2Ï€r^2 +2Ï€rh$ To find the surface area of a cylinder, you are adding the volume of the two circular bases ($2Ï€r^2$), plus the surface of the tube as if it were unrolled ($2Ï€rh$). The surface of the tube can also be written as $SA = Ï€dh$, because the diameter is twice the radius. In other words, the surface of the tube is the formula for the circumference of a circle with the additional dimension of height. Non-Prism Solids Non-prism solids are shapes in three dimensions that do not have any parallel, congruent sides. If you picked these shapes up with your hand, a maximum ofone side (if any) would lie flat against your palm. Cones A cone is similar to a cylinder, but has only one circular base instead of two. Its opposite end terminates in a point, rather than a circle. There are two kind of conesright cones and oblique cones. For the purposes of the ACT, you only have to concern yourself with right cones. Oblique cones will never appear on the ACT. A right cone has an apex (the terminating point on top) that sits directly above the center of the cone’s circular base. When a height ($h$) is dropped from the apex to the center of the circle, it makes a right angle with the circular base. Volume $\Volume = 1/3Ï€r^2h$ $Ï€$ is a constant, written as 3.14(159) $r$ is the radius of the circular base $h$ is the height, drawn at a right angle from the cone’s apex to the center of the circular base The volume of a cone is $1/3$ the volume of a cylinder. This makes sense logically, as a cone is basically a cylinder with one base collapsed into a point. So a cone’s volume will be less than that of a cylinder. Surface Area $\Surface\area = Ï€r^2 + pirl$ $l$ is the length of the side of the cone extending from the apex to the circumference of the circular base The surface area is the combination of the area of the circular base ($Ï€r^2$) and the lateral surface area ($Ï€rl$) Because right cones make a right triangle with side lengths of: $h$, $l$, and $r$, you can often use the pythagorean theorem to solve problems. Pyramids Pyramids are geometric solids that are similar to cones, except that they have a polygon for a base and flat, triangular sides that meet at an apex. There are many types of pyramids, defined by the shape of their base and the angle of their apex, but for the sake of the SAT, you only need to concern yourself with right, square pyramids. A right, square pyramid has a square base (each side has an equal length) and an apex directly above the center of the base. The height ($h$), drawn from the apex to the center of the base, makes a right angle with the base. Volume $\Volume = 1/3\area\of\the\base * h$To find the volume of a square pyramid, you could also say $1/3lwh$ or $1/3s^2h$, as the base is a square, so each side length is the same. Spheres A sphere is essentially a 3D circle. In a circle, any straight line drawn from the center to any point on the circumference will all be equidistant. This distance is the radius ($r$). In a sphere, this radius can extend in three dimensions, so all lines from the surface of the sphere to the center of the sphere are equidistant. Volume $\Volume = 4/3Ï€r^3$ Inscribed Solids The most common inscribed solids on the ACT math section will be: cube inside a sphere and sphere inside a cube. You may get another shape entirely, but the basic principles of dealing with inscribed shapes will still apply. The question is most often a test ofYou’ll often have to know the solid geometry principles and formulas for each shape individually to be able to put them together. When dealing with inscribed shapes, draw on the diagram they give you. If they don’t give you a diagram, make your own!By drawing in your own lines, you’ll be better able to translate the three dimensional objects into a series of two dimensional objects, which will more often than not lead you to your solution. Understand that when you are given a solid inside another solid, it is for a reason. It may look confusing to you, but the ACT will always give you enough information to solve a problem. For example, the same line will have a different meaning for each shape, and this is often the key to solving the problem. So we have an inscribed solid and no drawing. So first thing's first, make your drawing! Now because we have a sphere inside a cube, you can see that the radius of the sphereis always half the length of any side of the cube (because a cube by definition has all equal sides). So $2r$ is the length of all the sides of the cube. Now plug $2r$ into your formula for finding the volume of a cube. You can either use the cube volume formula: $V = s^3$ = $(2r)^3 = 8r^3$ Or you can use the formula to find the volume of any rectangular solid: $V = lwh$ = $(2r)(2r)(2r) = 8r^3$ Either way, you getthe answer E,$8r^3$ Notice how answer B is $2r^3$. This is a trick answer designed to trap you. If you didn't use parentheses properly in your volume of a cube formula, you would have gotten $2r^3$. But if you understand that each side length is $2r$ and so that entire length must be cubed, then you will get the correct answer of $8r^3$. For the vast majority of inscribed solids questions, the radius (or diameter) of thecircle will be the key to solving the question.The radiusof the sphere will be equal to half the length of the side of a cube if the cube is inside the sphere (as in the question above). This means that the diameter of the sphere will be equal to one side of the cube, because the diameter is twice the radius. But what happens when you have a sphere inside a cube? In this case, the diameter of the sphere actually becomes the diagonal of the cube. What is the maximum possible volume of acube, in cubic inches,thatcould be inscribed inside a sphere with a radius of 3 inches? A) $12√3$ (approximately $20.78$) B) $24√3$ (approximately $41.57$) C) $36√3$ (approximately $62.35$) D) $216$ E)$1728$ First, draw out your figure. You can see that, unlike when the sphere was inscribed in the cube, the side of thecube is not twice the radius of the circle because there are gaps between the cube's sides and the circumference of the sphere. The only straight line of the cube that touches two opposite sides of the sphere is the cube's diagonal. So we need the formula for the diagonal of a cube: $\side√3 = \diagonal$ $s√3 = 6$ (Why is the diagonal 6? Because the radius of the sphere is 3, so $(3)(2) = 6$) $3s^2 = 36$ $s^2 = 12$ $s = √12$ $(√12)^3 = 12√12 = 24√3$ Though solid geometry may seem confusing at first,practice and attention to detail will have you navigating the way to the correct answer The Take-Aways The solid geometry questions on the ACT will alwaysask you about volume, surface area, or the distance between points on the figure. The way they make it tricky is by making you compare the elements of different figures or by making you take multiple steps per problem. But you can always break down any ACT question into smaller pieces. ACT Math Strategy: The Steps to Solvinga Solid Geometry Problem 1) Identify what the problem is asking you to find. Is the problem asking about cubes or spheres? Both? Are you being asked to find the volume or the surface area of a figure? Both? Make sure you understandwhich formulas you'll need and what elements of the geometric solid(s) you are dealing with. 2) Draw it out Draw a picture any time they describe a solid without providing you with a picture. This will often make it easier to see exactly what information you have and how you can use that information to find what the question is asking you to provide. 3) Use your formulas Once you've identified the formulas you'll need, it's often a simple matter of plugging in your given information. If you cannot remember your formulas (like the formula for a diagonal, for example), use alternative methods to come to the answer, like the pythagorean theorem. 4) Keep your information clear and double check your work Did you make sure to label your work? The makers of the test know that it's easy for students to get sloppy in a high-stress environment and they put in bait answers accordingly. So make sure thevolume for your cylinder and thevolume for your cube are labeled accordingly. And don't forget to give your answer a double-check if you have time! Does it make sense to say that a box with a height of 20 feet can fit inside a box with a volume of 15 cubic feet? Definitely not! Make sure all the elements of your answer and your work are in the right place before you finish. Kate’s father was one of the founders of the Pacific Railroad and was a self-made man. Madame Charleville taught Kate about music, history, speaking French, and the need to live life clearly and fearlessly (Toth, 13). Kate O’Flaherty enrolled in the Academy of the Sacred Heart in 1855 which she attended sporadically for thirteen years with her friend Kitty Garesche. Kate also enrolled in the Academy of the Visitation in 1865. In 1868, Kate graduated from the Academy of the Sacred Heart and visited New Orleans in April 1869 (Seyers ted, 23). Kate got married with Oscar Chopin on June 9, 1870 in Holy Angels Church St. Louis and spent their honeymoon in Europe from June-September 1870 (Green, 5). The couple settled in 443 Magazine St; Northeast Corner Pete and Constantinople New Orleans (now 1413 Louisiana Avenue). Kate gave birth to six children (5 boys and 1 girl) (Green, 2). Their names are Jean Baptiste, Oscar Charles, George Francis, Frederick, Felix Andrew, and Leila/Marie Laiza. In December 10, 1882, Oscar Chopin died from complications of swamp fever. Kate, together with her children, returned to St. Louis with her children mid-1884. Their family lived at 1125 St. Ange Avenue then at 1122. In 1888, Kate began to write seriously after the death of her mother Eliza O’Flaherty. Kate was emotionally burnt of all her losses that she found comfort in writing through the suggestions of Frederick Kolbenheyer, a physician (Walker, 51). Kate has been popular until the extreme criticism of her novel â€Å"T he Awakening†. Poor health and concerns regarding family put her down. She was a member of the St. Louis Children of Solidarity and Wednesday Club. Members of the Wednesday Club praised her novel â€Å"The Awakening†. She was attending St. Louis World Fair on August 20, 1904, suffering from cerebral hemorrhage. Then on the 22nd, she died and is buried on the 24th of August in Calvary Cemetery, St. Louis. Significant Written Works Kate Chopin wrote out of emotions and experiences. She portrayed women’s desire of freedom. â€Å"Lilia’s Polka† was her first work and she wrote it for her daughter in 1888. Hildegard's Spirit-Filled, Visionary Music - Term Paper Example Some people live such extraordinary lives that their death doesn’t particularly slow the spread of their influence at all. Hildegard Von Bingen was such a person, and music was central to her experience and to her identity. In fact, she referred to herself as a tone from the tuba of God (Phillips 59). This paper aims to provide some insight into her life, and to discuss the impact her music has had on both secular and sacred music that followed. She was born in Bermersheim, near Alzey, in the summer of 1098, to a noble family. She had her first visionary experience before the age of five, and furthermore was not a healthy child. Her parents dedicated her to the religious life at age eight (Flanagan 2) She was enclosed in the cell of a pious, recluse noble woman, Jutta, where she spent most of her days in prayer. (3). More girls were also enclosed there, and by the time Hildegard was age 13 or 14, the cell had grown into a Benedictine convent, attached to a monastery (3). Jutta died when Hildegard was 38, and Hildegard subsequently was chosen to take over the leadership of the convent. Up to that time, Hildegard had continued to see visions, but had learned at an early age not to speak of them to anyone, to avoid embarrassment. She told only Jutta and later her teacher (3). At age 42, Hildegard had a mystical vision in which she suddenly accessed the meanings of all scripture and was told to write and publicize what she heard and understood. She resisted at first, out of low self esteem and humility, but her resistance caused her to become very ill. Her illness only left her when she was finally able to write (4). She spent 10 years writing her first visionary work. During this time, Hildegard announced that God had instructed her to move her convent away from the monastery. The monks resisted, for reasons of finance and reputation, wanting to retain control over Hildegard, as an asset (5). She received papal permission and authority, once the church esta blished that her visions were authentic and that the Holy Spirit was revealing truths to her. She took her nuns to the place indicated in her vision, and she wrote three major volumes of revealed visionary information, left correspondence and other writings and art, and innumerable musical compositions, which are appreciated today (5). Although she suffered from health problems throughout her life, still she was a successful author, composer, artist, mystic, religious leader, visionary-prophetess, correspondent, abbess, teacher, rebel, scholar and healer, and she died at a ripe old age. One theory about her illness, a feminist explanation, is that it was a result of her struggle to find her own voice (Grant and Bingen). After all, she had been given away by her parents and grew up in a restrictive locked cell with a woman who spent her days in prayer and chanting. She had visions, some rather frightening, with dark and monstrous beings and explosions of blinding light, which she had to mostly keep to herself, to avoid embarrassment, Her health was delicate, a fact not conducive to claiming her own power, and consequently her own voice. She was creative and talented, artistically and intellectually gifted, but she was under the authority of monks and male church leaders who upheld the most stringent male-dominated values and norms of an extremely patriarchal society. Her most personal self-expression required papal permission. This name comes from the language spoken by the Tuareg nomads who life in it. It was well known to Arabs and other traders when it served as a hub of culture and commerce during the 14th and 15th centuries Timbuktu  is also home to several famous mosques, including Sankore, Djingareyber, and Sidi Yahya, all of which are made from the distinctive mud which characterizes buildings in  Timbuktu. Due to  desertification  and related issues,  Timbuktu  is a very difficult city to live in it. [1] The objective of this research is to review the literature as it pertains to desertification, to define the current status of desertification, to document that designed to reverse the negative effects of desertification, and to analyze effect of desertification as well as their consequences. Review of Desertification [2] Desertification  is a type of  land degradation  in which a relatively  dry  land region becomes increasingly arid, typically losing its bodies of water as well as vegetation and wildlife. Desertification is known as Desert encroachment. Any drought on agricultural land or cultivable, and converted into barren land and is caused by long drought on the one hand, and human activity on the other. And desertification phenomenon is also known as: turning wide range of fertile areas and high production to poor areas of vegetable and animal for many reasons. Desertification has four types in term of dangerous the United Nations designated it. First, very severe desertification: a shift of land to a non-productive state completely. This can be reclaimed by expensive costs and only limited spaces and in many cases, the agricultural reform process becomes totally unproductive. There are many examples such as Iraq, Syria, Jordan, Egypt, Libya, Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco and Somalia. Second, Desertification: when spreading of unwanted plants, and there is a decline of good vegetable production up to 50%, like land in the east and north-west of the delta in Egypt. Third, Moderate desertification: where good vegetable production declines. It causes salinization of the soil, which reduces production by 10-15%, and up to 25% such as Egypt. Fourth, slight desertification: when damage occurs or destruction very simple in vegetation and soil which can be negligible as in Saharan desert of the Arabian island. Desertification has a many reasons where causes or factors are divided into two categories: natural and human. Natural factors: climate, drought, quicksand, the high soil salinity and soil creep. Human factors: such as over grazing, poor irrigation methods, deforestation, creeping urbanization and pollution. We can overcome desertification in many ways, such as: sand dune stabilization, increase the area of agricultural land, the enactment of laws that prevent harvesting, water pollution prevention and the introduction of new crops more suited to the environmental conditions. Desertification in Timbuktu [3] Where it came from the sand on the vegetation that surrounded the city, the river and bridge branch with a length of about 7 km which connects the city by the main reaches of the River Niger that facilitates the transfer of goods to the city by river navigation. The program aims to: Strengthen the capacity of local organizations and institutions to express their collective needs and to create and manage their investments. Develop the potential of agro-pastoral zone in a sustainable manner. Improve access to basic services through the development of community health centers. Contribute to the development of national policies to fight against rural poverty. Promote policy dialogue to promote the interests of local rural communities. à ¢Ã¢â€š ¬Ã‚ ¢ United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification [5] [6]   In those countries experiencing serious drought and / or desertification, particularly in Africa, the Convention to combat desertification and mitigate the effects of drought through national action programs that include long-term strategies supported by international cooperation and partnership arrangements. Analytical Reading “The Luncheon” by Somerset Maugham Essay

The text under analysis belongs to the pen of William Somerset Maugham, the one of the best known English writers of the 20th century. He was not only a novelist, but also one of the most successful dramatist and short-story writers. He was born in Paris in 1874. His parents died when he was very young. The boy was taken away from the French school, and went for his lessons daily to the apartment of the English clergyman at the church, then he was sent to England to attend school. In 1890 he went abroad and studied at the University of Heidelberg from which he returned to England in 1892 and became a medical student at St. Thomas’s hospital in London. After that Somerset decided to devote his life to literature. â€Å"I didn’t want to be a doctor. I didn’t want to be anything but a writer†. The technique of the short story had always interested Maugham. Somerset Maugham has written 24 plays, 19 novels and a large number of short stories. At the beginning of the text the narrator, who is the author’s mouthpiece here recognizes a woman with whom he had a lunch several years ago. Then he starts remembering that unforgettable evening: He was a young man, living in Paris and could barely keep body and soul together. She had read his book and wrote a letter to him, expressing her wish to have with him a little luncheon at Foyot’s – a very expensive restaurant. He couldn’t say no to a woman and invited her for lunch. He had only eighty francs to last him the rest of the month. To his horror she ordered one expensive dish after another. He paid the bill and was left with no money at all. However, at the end of the story, the narrator feels that he has finally had his revenge when he sees that the lady has put on a lot of weight. Compositionally the story falls into 3 parts. The story begins with the exposition, which extends over the first several paragraphs. At the beginning of the text the narra tor sees a woman at the theatre in many years since they first met and can hardly recognize her. Then the author presents a flashback to the past which goes to the last paragraph with a help of the sentence â€Å"Did I remember?† which allows us to know what had happened many years ago. Here we learn about the place of action and its time. The reader gets information  about the events, preceding the meeting of the main characters and also understands that the narrator was a very poor man. Then come complications, opened with the sentence: † She was not so young as I expected and in appearance imposing rather than attractive.† The action takes place in the restaurant. Here the reader learns more about the characters. The author describes how this lady enjoys the meal, ordering the most expensive dishes and he is wondering about the bill. The bill was finally paid and the narrator found himself with not a penny left in his pocket for the whole month. After it the author comes back to the present time and here comes the climax. Now, after 20 years had passed by, the narrator has had his revenge at last because â€Å"Today she weighs twenty-one stone†. This story is a first-person narrative. The dialogues are predominant in the complications – the biggest part of the text. The general atmosphere of the text is emotional and ironical (even the title â€Å"The Luncheon† is ironical, because the word â€Å"luncheon† means a â€Å"light snack†, but in fact it turned to be an abundant and very expensive meal), but also strained (â€Å"I watched the abandoned woman thrust them down her throat in large voluptuous mouthfuls, and in my polite way I discoursed on the condition of the drama in the Balkans.†; † Panic seized me. It was not a question now of how much money I should have left over for the rest of the month, but whether I had enough to pay the bill.†). The tone of this story is ironical. The author uses direct (â€Å"But I was flattered, and I was too young to have learned to say no to a woman†; â€Å"I watched the abandoned woman thrust them down her throat†¦Ã¢â‚¬ ) and indirect methods of characterization. The characters are presented through their actions, descriptions of the outward appearance and things that surround the characters. The waiter might be called a minor character. To my mind the woman is smart, gluttonous, selfish, cold, indiscreet. She is a villain who serves a foil to the protagonist. By constantly repeating her ironic expression † I never eat more than one thing † she emphasized the conflict between what she says and what she does. The author – the protagonist, is a poor, kind, honest and sincere man. The author’s style is vivid, clear and emotional. The author uses stylistic devices sparingly. In my opinion there is an external conflict in this story. The theme of this story is appearance against reality. Everything in the  story is not really what it seems to be. The narrator expected to have a little luncheon with a beautiful lady. But it turned to be an expensive meal with an unattractive woman. This woman repeats â€Å"I never eat anything for luncheon†, but eats everything she can. I think that the author’s message â€Å"the appearance is not yet the reality† is very important and relevant today.

Throughout the play the audience undoubtedly experiences feelings of horror at Macbeth, but we are also driven, through an understanding of his character, to admiration and sympathy. T his would not be the case if Macbeth was a totally vile and reprehensible villain, and thus the tragedy of Shakespeare’s Macbeth is clear. Macbeth was certainly no villain to begin with.He is introduced to us as a man of great honour, nobility and strength of morals. He is held in high regard by King Duncan, who addresses him as â€Å"valiant cousin, worthy gentleman†- so highly, in fact, that Macbeth is granted a promotion over Banquo (who seems to be of an extremely worthy and loyal character). But there is a fatal difference between Macbeth and Banquo- Macbeth’s ambition and lust for power. He is a man with an unsurpassable desire to advance himself.He himself identifies this quality while he contemplates an action that he is wholly repulsed by; â€Å"I have no spur To prick the sides of my intent, but only Vaulting Ambition which o’erleaps itself, And falls on th’ other. † This â€Å"Vaulting Ambition† is what makes Macbeth vulner able and leads him to commit possibly the most vile deed he can imagine, setting him on a path of destruction. There is a temptation to use the fact that he could comprehend the vileness of his deed as a reason as to why we should condemn Macbeth as even worse a villain.Gothic fiction is a form of literature that includes elements of both horror and romance. Most gothic fiction has things that are supernatural, includes feelings like guilt, sin, madness, settings usually in a castle or in dark caves, mystery, suspense, violence, a damsel in distress, and omens or dark curses. The play â€Å"Macbeth† by William Shakespeare is written in gothic literature, this is evident through an examination of the feelings of guilt, sin, madness, the battle between good and evil and omens and curses that take place throughout the play.Omens, curses, prophecies, supernatural beings, these are all things that are very common in gothic literature. Shakespeare uses these things to make the play seem darker and have more mystery to it. There are three witches in â€Å"Macbeth† and they make prophecies that will alter Macbeth’s future. They predict that three things will happen, one of them being â€Å"The power of man for none of woman born/ Shall harm Macbeth,† 4. 1, 91 & 92. Traditionally, characters in gothic fiction have their future predicted by some supernatural being; they use this knowledge to alter their life. Macbeth is no different.One would think that it is impossible to not be born from a woman, so Macbeth uses this to gain confidence that no one will ever be able to kill him. Later on in â€Å"Macbeth†, after the witches make the prophecy of Macbeth not being killed by man born of woman, he goes to battle with Macduff. Since it is said to be that Macbeth cannot be killed by man born of woman, Macbeth is told â€Å"Macduff was from his mother’s womb/ Untimely ripped,† 5. 8, 19 & 20. After being told this Macbet h decided to go to battle with Macduff and got killed, this shows that the prophecy did alter his life in a way he never saw coming.
